CARROLLTON, TX\u00a0\u2013 May 27, 2024\u00a0<\/b>\u2013 Sentinel, a global leader in automated ink management systems<\/span>, has installed a Sentinel iPro system at\u00a0Bison Printing<\/span><\/a>. The ink-management system is installed on its Komori Lithrone GL840, an eight-color, 40-inch sheetfed-offset printing press featuring LED-UV technology. As a general commercial shop, Bison produces booklets, catalogs and marketing collateral as well as direct-mail pieces\/packages. \u201cWe handle fulfillment, too,\u201d notes President, Franz Beisser, adding that its full bindery is capable of foil-stamping, embossing, die-cutting, gluing and tipping.<\/p>\n

\u201cBison Printing has automated a labor-intensive process in sheetfed offset printing by investing in the Sentinel iPro ink management system,\u201d states Kevin McAnally, General Manager, Sentinel Ink Systems.\u00a0\u201c<\/span>On an eight-color press, Sentinel\u00a0<\/span>monitors ink use at each press tower and automatically provides a consistent bead of ink. Advanced automation<\/span>\u00a0resulting in labor savings and maintaining color consistency\u00a0is a big part of the attraction for commercial printers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWith the Sentinel in place, a second pressman can handle two presses,\u201d Beisser explains. \u201cThere\u2019s no manual ink scraping involved with the iPro process, so that the operator is freed up to help turn paper and run the feeder on our other, five-color Komori\u201d that sets next to the GL840. (Bison also owns a 28-inch, five-color Lithrone sheetfed model.) Beisser observers, \u201cwe are saving half a second pressman over two shifts, which equates to one full man per year. We have had the Sentinel iPro running for 6 months and we look forward to a speedy return-on-investment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Like many other print service providers, the industry\u2019s skilled labor shortage has hit Bison hard, according to Beisser, a second-generation owner, along with his two brothers, of the company their father started in a basement in 1977. \u201cThere are not many shops left in our region, and we have a hard time finding and hiring experienced people,\u201d he observes. \u201cThe problem has only gotten worse over time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe types of work we run vary so much,\u201d comments Beisser, \u201cfrom light ink coverage to heavy-coverage \u2018paint jobs.\u2019 So much of the ink savings depends on the paper being used. With the Sentinel system there\u2019s no ink left in the cartridge.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s face it: Scraping out ink by hand largely depends on a person\u2019s mood,\u201d laughs Beisser. \u201cIf someone leaves half a pound in the can, it will add up after a while.\u201d Tempering waste ink helps to track job-to-job consumables usage and allows Bison\u2019s estimators to tweak pricing accordingly. \u201cWe hit reset or \u2018zero out\u2019 on a new job, and Sentinel gives us a true number,\u201d he continues. \u201cThat beats counting cans in the trash!\u201d<\/p>\n

He also has gauged better productivity on longer press runs requiring a lot of ink coverage. \u201cWith Sentinel, we don\u2019t need anybody physically up on the printing units,\u201d Beisser says. All monitoring is done from the main console, \u201cand the whole function is automated, even the agitators,\u201d he adds. With no ink backing up in the fountains, their Komori machine runs cleaner with \u201cless goop on the knives.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEase of operation is important to the Beisser brothers, and Franz feels that managing ink with Pamarco\u2019s automation makes the press simpler and, obviously, less \u201cmanual\u201d to run,\u201d concludes Sentinel\u2019s\u00a0McAnally.<\/span>\u00a0\u201cIn the end, that enhances employee retention which is a huge plus in today\u2019s market.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false,"gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"html"}]},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
